What to Ask the Landing Tackle Shop Before Your Trip

Before you board, stop by the landing tackle shop. Tell them which boat you’re taking and what gear you brought. If it’s your first trip, let them know.

These are the people to ask about getting ready for your trip. A few minutes at the counter can save you from buying things you don’t need—or boarding without something you do.

Not sure what to say?

“I’m heading out on [this boat] today. Here’s what I have. What else would you recommend?”

You don’t need to know all the fishing terms. Show them your tackle or bring a photo of it.

Five questions worth asking

  • What’s been biting? Ask what your boat has been targeting and what they expect for your trip.

  • What weights should I bring? Ask about sinker sizes and how many spares you’ll need.

  • What hooks and rigs do you recommend? Ask them to show you the setup if you haven’t used it before.

  • Are any jigs or lures worth bringing? Tell them your budget and ask what they’d buy first.

  • What comes with my rental gear? Check before buying tackle that might already be included.

Why ask each time?

What worked on your last trip might not be the best choice today. Bait, current, depth, and the fishing plan can change.

The shop can help you prepare. Once you’re aboard, listen to the captain and crew and ask for help if you need it.

You don’t have to show up as an expert. Just show up willing to ask.
